A little history-The ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’, situated on the Dalmatian coast, became an important Mediterranean sea power from the 13th century onwards. Although severely damaged by an earthquake in 1667, Dubrovnik managed to preserve its beautiful Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, monasteries, palaces and fountains. Damaged again in the 1990s by armed conflict, it is now the focus of a major restoration programmes.

Residents sure make the most of their space and have cool court yards.

It is well known, at least within the city, that many people are finding it more and more difficult, and more and more inconvenient to live peacefully in Dubrovnik, particularly in the central area. With many former residents moving away and leaving their former Old City apartment to be rented out to tourists, the trend in depopulation within the walls seems set to continue on this path. This may be just one of the reasons for such a downhill turn.

One of the places someone must visit in lifetime, it’s really a gem. Every minute spent here will stay in your mind forever. Centuries old and fully preserved, full of nice stone buildings. Churches, public houses, private houses, narrow streets full of special spirit. Given that it was the off-season, it was perfectly understandable that many of the restaurants in the streets off the main street were closed for the season, but there was still a decent amount open with a variety of cuisine types available. With the 3 full days available to us, there was plenty to keep one occupied in and around Old Town and many day trips available had we been there for longer.
